Cops: Carteret man ends

dispute with 12-inch knife

EDISON — Police arrested and charged a Carteret man with aggravated assault after he allegedly slashed another man with a kitchen knife last week.

Jaikirat Bajwa, 29, was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, said Patrolman Robert Dudash.

The incident began when Bajwa and two friends were at the Pioneer Bar in Iselin sometime between 3:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 22, he said.

Bajwa apparently got into a verbal dispute with one of his friends, an Edison resident. The third man, also from Carteret, intervened to end the dispute at that point, Dudash said.

All three then went to the Edison man’s apartment on Cinder Road, where a short time later Bajwa and the Carteret man had a verbal dispute, Dudash said.

Bajwa then retrieved a 12-inch kitchen knife and slashed the victim on his right upper thigh, Dudash said.

Police were called and Bajwa was arrested without incident. The knife seized as evidence, Dudash said.

The victim sustained a 6-inch gash, which required approximately 50 stitches to close, Dudash said.

He was treated at JFK Medical Center and released.

Bajwa’s bail was set at $100,000 with no 10-percent option, which a bondsman posted for him, Dudash said.
