Two students arrested in Edison School district this week
Both charged with weapons possession, one with false
public alarm BY TOM CAIAZZA Staff Writer
EDISON - Two students were arrested in separate incidents this week
resulting in charges of weapons possession on school grounds, and in one case
causing a false public alarm, according to police.
Saul D. Jimenez, 18,
was arrested at 11:05 a.m. on Friday after a teacher allegedly heard him yell,
"He has a gun" in a hallway of Edison High School. Lt. Joseph Shannon of the
Edison Police Department said that Jimenez, a junior, was found to be in
possession of a box cutter when arrested at the high school.
On
Wednesday, April 18, a 16-year-old male juvenile student was arrested outside
Benjamin Franklin School allegedly shooting a pellet gun away from the rear of
the building, according to police. The incident took place after school hours
but Shannon said some students were still in the building and noticed the boy
with the pellet gun. The gun was retrieved by Emil Ferlicchi, a faculty member
at Benjamin Franklin School.
According to Superintendent of Schools
Carol Toth, students at Edison High School had their backpacks searched Thursday
after rumors began spreading of a possible incident similar to the situation at
Virginia Tech on April 16.
According to a press release from police,
those rumors continued Thursday night with reports of instant messages of vague
warnings of a possible incident at an Edison school for Friday, April 20.
Toth and Shannon said that the district and police department are
investigating all rumors.
A letter was sent home
to parents on Thursday from Steve Preville, principal of Benjamin Franklin
School, regarding Wednesday's incident.
