Nonprofit offering free yoga, meditation classes

  • Jain Vishwa Bharti of North America (JVBNA), a nonprofit organization, conducts free yoga and meditation classes every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the North Edison Branch Library, 777 Grove Ave., Edison, and every Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1295 Oak Tree Road, Iselin section of Woodbridge.

    Parade committee slates Memorial Day parade

    The Edison Township Parade Committee is formulating plans for its Memorial Day parade, which will be held at 2 p.m. May 29 in the Stelton section of the township.

    Mental health panel

    sets June 18 garage sale

    NAMI-Middlesex, an affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an organization for family and friends of the mentally ill, will hold its annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 18 at 316 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.

    Donations may be dropped off on Friday mornings at the garage sale site.

    Sacred Heart Carnival

    planned for May 25-28

    The annual Sacred Heart Parish Carnival will be held from 6-10 p.m. on May 25, 26, 27 and 28 in the church parking lot, located between Washington Avenue and Main Street, South Amboy.

    The event will feature carnival rides and games. A food tent will offer homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasi, pizza, sausage with peppers and onions, hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries and more. Takeouts will be available.

    Bracelet Night is planned for May 25. Theme nights include Polish Night, May 25; Italian Night, May 27; and All-American Night, May 28.

    A 50/50 raffle will be held each night, and there will be a “super” 50/50 on May 28.

    Life Line Screening aims to reduce risk of stroke

    Life Line Screening Radiology will be at Edison Elks Lodge No. 2487, 375 Old Post Road, on May 31 and St. Cecelia Parish, 45 Wilus Way, Iselin section of Woodbridge, on June 1 to screen residents in an effort to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Appointments begin at 9 a.m. Screenings are fast (10 minutes or less), painless and low-cost, and involve the use of ultrasound technology.

    Life Line Screening Radiology is dedicated to providing the highest-quality imaging technology at an affordable rate. Its goal is to make people aware of an undetected health problem and encourage them to seek follow-up care with a physician.

    Drama alums to reunite

    for ‘Bye Bye Birdie’

    In March 1995 the East Brunswick High School (EBHS) Drama Club presented “Bye Bye Birdie” as its annual spring musical. Now, 10 years later, the original cast members will return for two shows, 8 p.m. on May 27 and 28, on the stage at the high school, Cranbury Road, to celebrate the drama club and to raise funds for current students.

    The show is being put together by producer and EBHS alumnus Jason Goldstein, class of 1998.

    Tickets, which will be available at the door, cost $8 for the general public and $5 for students and senior citizens.

    YMCA camp registration for preschoolers ongoing

    The Metuchen Branch YMCA, 65 High St., is holding open registration for preschool day camp, which begins the week of May 31 and runs through Sept. 2. “Kinderkamp” for children ages 3-5 includes snack, a swim lesson and outdoor activities. Half-day and full-day sessions are available, as are before- and after-care options. Cost per child for five full days is $140 per week, with a $35 camp membership fee.

    Film night to feature Hitchcock classic

    In conjunction with the Forum Theatre, the Metuchen Cultural Arts Commission will be sponsoring a classic film night at 7:30 p.m. May 26, featuring Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, payable to the theater the evening of the show. Concessions will be available for purchase. The theater is located at 314 Main St. in Metuchen.     Job seekers support group meets every Thursday

    Metuchen readies for Memorial Day parade

    The borough of Metuchen will hold its Memorial Day parade May 30, rain or shine, beginning at 10 a.m. from the Pearl Street parking lot. The parade will end at Memorial Park with a brief ceremony, featuring military speakers and guest soloist Patricia Nevius. The Memorial Day Parade Committee invites all veterans to join in the celebration and also encourages all Scouts and youth groups to march. The Metuchen High School band, under the leadership of John Morrison, as well as the Michael Aramondo and Kearny Caledonian Pipe bands will all perform. Many local veterans are slated to be present.     Kiwanis Club to meet two Tuesdays a month

    The newly formed Edison Kiwanis Club will meet at noon every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Edison Job Corps, 500 Plainfield Ave. New members are welcome.     Theater company to offer many children’s shows

    Forum Theatre Co., Metuchen, has announced its 2004-05 schedule of productions for A Kid’s Forum, the company’s theater program for young and family audiences.

    • May 7-June 11 — “Treasure Island,” based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson about a young boy’s adventure after he stumbles upon a map to find buried treasure. The production will feature performers using sign language and the spoken word.

    A Kid’s Forum productions, which feature live music, are performed by professional actors. All musicals are recommended for children ages 2 and older. After each performance, cast members greet the children and are also available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. All seats must be reserved.     Funeral home to offer free bereavement support

    The Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave., Metuchen, is offering a bereavement support group. Ongoing sessions will be held every Wednesday and Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon, as well as Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. The program, which is free of charge, will take place at the funeral home.

    Carol Burner, a certified grief recovery specialist, will facilitate the program. A professional with a master’s degree in counseling from Seton Hall University, South Orange, she has spent the past eight years offering individual and group counseling to clients suffering from significant and tragic losses.
