Barrons enter stretch run with momentum
Mike Yannazzo is sure proud of his girl bowlers after they won the Brick Memorial Bowling Tournament.
This past Saturday, Woodbridge High School not only finished first among 31 teams, but also bowled a 2,853 series. Woodbridge bowled over a 930 each of the three games — a feat no other team accomplished on the day.
Ashley DiSilvestro bowled a 601 series to lead Woodbridge. Nicole Caggiano bowled a 585, and Amanda Small bowled a 562. Also contributing in the win was Melissa Huntley, who bowled a 551.
Despite the win, Yannazzo admits that he is still “juggling the lineups a bit.”
The boys team did not fare as well, finishing sixth in the Brick Tournament, though their coach was not at all disappointed with their effort or the result.
“I thought my boys bowlers tried really hard,” Yannazzo said. “I think that one of the lanes that they were bowling on was extremely tough to bowl on. Overall, I believe they did quite well.”
Brian Small Jr. bowled remarkably well, shooting a 707 series, while Albert Patrick shot a 278 game.
“Coming up next on our schedule is the Greater Middlesex Conference Individual Tournament,” said Yannazzo.
Every bowler gets to compete in this tournament, which begins today. The top 20 bowlers advance to bowl next Wednesday. The bowlers who finish in the top 10 (combining his or her scores from the two weeks together) advance. Bowlers who finish six through 10 get awards. The rest compete in what is called a step-ladder tournament.
“Nicole Caggiano won this tournament last year, when she was only a freshman,” Yannazzo said. “This tournament was set up so anyone has a chance of winning it.”
Also creeping up on Woodbridge’s schedule are the Greater Middlesex Conferences Team Tournament and the Central Jersey sectionals.
“This is the busy point of the year. I like to call it the stretch run,” the coach said.
