Fire at motor lodge injures two

The Edison Motor Lodge was the site of a severe structure fire that destroyed much of the building and sent two people to the hospital for smoke inhalation May 3. Route 1 was closed in Edison for an extended period of time.
EDISON - A fire ripped through a local motel on May 3 causing heavy damage and injuries to at least two people, according to Edison police.

The fire began around 6:30 p.m. at the Edison Motor Lodge on Route 1 in Edison, according to Lt. Joseph Shannon. The fire was first observed by police officers working at a carnival across the street. The officers observed the smoke coming from the motor lodge, crossed the street and began to evacuate the building.

The fire turned into a large structure fire, causing the closing of Route 1 for an extended period of time that evening. Police said that two people were injured, one critically, and were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Updates on those people could not be obtained by press time.

Shannon said that the fire was of an unknown origin and police are still investigating the incident.
