'Click It or Ticket' effort yields 200-plus citations
BY KATHY CHANG
Staff Writer

METUCHEN - - As the nationwide "Click It or Ticket Mobilization" campaign ended this weekend, the borough Police Department issued more than 200 motor vehicle citations.

As of June 1, the department issued 136 seat belt violations, three suspended license violations, seven child seat violations, nine uninsured vehicle violations, and 119 other motor vehicle violations.

The campaign, which ran from May 21 to June 3 statewide as well as nationwide, is a high publicity law enforcement effort that gives more of a reason to buckle up - the threat of a traffic ticket.

Over the three-week campaign, law enforcement agencies focused on safety belt violations and publicized the stepped-up effort through news media and advertising.

The campaign incorporates zero-tolerance enforcement of safety belt laws with paid advertising and the support of government agencies, local coalitions, and school officials to increase safety belt use and defend against serious injury or death in traffic crashes.

In May 2006, 441 police agencies participated in the campaign.

As a result, New Jersey's seat belt use rate has risen to an all-time high of 90 percent, according to the state Department of Law & Public Safety.
