BOE to hold special meeting

EDISON - The township Board of Education has called a special meeting for Wednesday, June 6, in order to vote on where to cut from the failed school budget.

According to Schools Superintendent Carol Toth, the board will make final cuts to the budget that will most likely differ from the suggestions made a few weeks ago by the Township Council when they mandated a $1.7 million cut from the school budget.

The council suggested large cuts in the district's capital outlay budget, which would leave precious little money for facility upgrades. The council suggested cutting the capital outlay budget to avoid cutting services to students and adversely affecting the quality of the education.

Toth said on Monday that one of the things the board is considering cutting would be the hazardous busing, which would free up about $375,000. The hazardous bussing program, which is not state mandated, would affect roughly 2,000 children and the district would require parents to pay a fee for the service per child, per year.

Toth said that everything is still under consideration and nothing has been set in stone. The board is late in sending its budget to the county in order to have the tax rate set. Toth said a decision will come on Wednesday.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at J.P. Stevens High School. It is a public meeting.
