Assault charges added in drunken-driving accident BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
METUCHEN - A 22-year-old borough man was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault on June 12 that stemmed from a June 2 accident that left his 1996 Ford Explorer overturned on Central Avenue and three people injured.
The three counts of aggravated assault were added to the charges of driving while intoxicated, failure to wear a seat belt and reckless driving, which Bernard Becker had already been charged with, police said.
Becker lost control of his Ford Explorer while traveling north from Durham Avenue onto Central Avenue, when he attempted to avoid a dip in the road, causing his vehicle to spin out of control, hit a curb and roll over, police said.
When police spoke to Becker, they observed that he was slurring his speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said.
Police said they observed open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle.
Three people, including a 14-year-old, were injured in the incident and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and John F. Kennedy Hospital in Edison.
The Metuchen First Aid Squad and the Metuchen Fire Department responded to the scene.
