Man shoots ex-girlfriend, self at mall
Girl in stable condition; shooter dies from self-inflicted gunshot
BY TOM CAIAZZA Staff Writer

A man from South River shot his ex-girlfriend Friday, Sept. 7, at Menlo Park Mall before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said that at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Friday, Raynell Anaya, 23, of South River entered the Gymboree store at Menlo Park Mall and shot store employee Maliha Janjua, 22, of Carteret.

Police said that when they responded, they found Janjua collapsed on the floor, having sustained a single gunshot wound. Police would not specify where Janjua was shot.

Anaya, an employee of Macy's in the mall, fatally shot himself. He was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m. by Dr. Abdel Malek of JFK Medical Center in Edison via telemetry.

The prosecutor's office said that Anaya's .357-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene. An autopsy was performed Saturday morning, and the investigation is considered ongoing.

Janjua was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was listed in stable condition on Saturday.

Though Anaya had discharged multiple shots before shooting himself, the prosecutor's office said Janjua was the only person injured.

A spokesman for Simon Property Group, the company that owns Menlo Park Mall, declined to comment as of Monday, but the group released a statement in which they expressed concern for the well-being of Janjua and gratitude to the Edison Police Department.

"Our hearts go out to the families, friends and co-workers whose lives were touched by this tragic incident," the statement read. "All of us at Menlo Park Mall pray for the young woman's full recovery."

The release goes on to thank the Edison police department for the "level of professionalism displayed" and said that Simon Property Group is working with local officials throughout the investigation.
