State corrections officer charged with assault, DUI

METUCHEN - A 50-year-old state Department of Corrections officer was charged with aggravated assault by motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated last week in connection with in a motor vehicle accident that occurred in August, police said.

Police charged John K. Groelly, Iselin, at 12:09 p.m. on Sept. 7, police said.

The accident occurred at 2:12 p.m. Aug. 10 as Groelly was traveling east on Route 27 near Waltham Avenue in his Saturn minivan. Groelly's vehicle crossed the double yellow line and hit a Saturn head-on that was traveling west, police said.

Both Groelly and the female driver of the Saturn were injured in the accident, police said.

Police said the female driver suffered serious injuries.

Groelly told police that he does not recall driving over the double yellow line, police said.

Police added that the accident occurred within 100 feet of Metuchen High School.
