Gas leak closes road temporarily

EDISON - An Oct. 2 gas leak backed up traffic for about two and a half hours and led to a temporary building evacuation.

According to Lt. Joseph Shannon of the Edison Township Police Department, an 8- inch gas main was found to be leaking around 12:40 p.m. that day. The leak was in front of 190 Route 27, with an odor coming up through the ground, prompting concerned people to call authorities.

Police closed off Route 27 between the Wood Avenue and Christie Street intersections for a brief period of time while the building at the site of the leak was evacuated. The building was deemed safe about an hour and a half. After being worked on by Elizabethtown Gas, the road was reopened around 3:20 p.m.
