Banning trucks in Metuchen would be wise
Iam writing in the hope that the tragic death of 3-year old Shaneil Lewis wasn't in vain. On Oct. 24, Shaneil was hit by a speeding truck at the intersection of Central Avenue and Durham Avenue in Metuchen. As a longtime resident of Central Avenue in Metuchen, I can say this was far from an isolated incident.

Out-of-control trucks have made this heavily pedestrian area into a danger zone for many years now. Even with many schools, shops and families living nearby, the truck drivers flout our speed limits and traffic laws.

Crossing a street at a stoplight shouldn't be a high-risk action, but for the families of Metuchen, it has become exactly that.

Trucks must be banned from this area. Such a simple step should have been done a long time ago. The mayor and council must ensure that tragic truck accidents like the one that took the life of Shaneil Lewis can never again claim the life of an innocent child in this neighborhood.
