Burned body found inside van
BY CHRIS GAETANO Staff Writer

EDISON - Edison police are investigating an apparent suicide that took place outside the Menlo Park Mall on Feb. 4.

According to Lt. Joseph Shannon, public information officer for the police department, Edison resident Paul Chang, 56, was found inside a 1991 Toyota Previa van with burns all over his upper body. Police were notified around 3:50 p.m. after the van was found parked outside the Rainforest Café, near the rear section of the mall.

"It's being investigated or treated as suicide, where apparently he, for whatever reason - I can't get into that - set himself on fire inside the vehicle," said Shannon.

Shannon said that Chang had doused himself with a flammable liquid and that the car's interior had significant damage, with the windows blackened from all the smoke.

"A crime scene was immediately started, and first aid and paramedics arrived on scene and attempted to revive him as he was transported to the JFK hospital, where they [pronounced him dead]," said Shannon.

According to Shannon, Chang's family had last seen him around 1 p.m. that day.
