Edison adds new bus to service seniors
BY CHRIS GAETANO Staff Writer

EDISON - The township added one more bus to its fleet that primarily serves the local senior citizen population, bringing the number of vehicles up to 13. The latest bus, a 2007 Ford Goshen, was presented to the public by Edison Mayor Jun Choi on its inaugural trip.

"Getting around for myself and my staff is ordinarily no problem, but for many seniors, getting around can be a struggle," said Choi, who later noted that in the suburbs, cars are practically obligatory.

The bus, the latest and last to be added to the township's fleet for now, will contribute to the free service for local seniors, taking them to doctors' offices, shopping centers and other locations. Each bus can hold up to 33 people.

The buses get a lot of use from residents. Last year, Choi said, 33,250 trips were taken by these buses, covering around 42,000 miles.

Judy Gillingham, assistant director for aging, emphasized how important it is for seniors to have transportation options to help them maintain their independence.

"Many of you out there own your own car. … Imagine waking up to find it's not there. How do you get to the food store, or the doctors?" asked Gillingham.

The bus cost about $73,000, the funds for which were in the capital budget last year. Senior citizens are brought to and from senior club meetings, shopping malls as well as medical, dialysis and nutrition appointments. The Edison Senior Citizen Transportation Service consists of a transportation coordinator who oversees daily operations, dispatching, and bus repair along with 11 drivers who provide senior transportation services. All drivers are required to hold a current, valid commercial driver's license (CDL). The service is not available to seniors who have a car, are currently driving, or have other means of transportation such as a spouse or family member. Although, should a medical condition prevent an individual from getting behind the wheel for a limited amount of time, they are eligible for the transportation service until such time that their physician allows them to drive again.

During the vehicle's maiden journey, many on board said they appreciate the township's investment in transportation.

"This is nice. [It is] a beautiful bus," said Jean Zavlacky.

"I think it's wonderful for the township to offer this service, and I'm so happy they have it. Even if I don't use it often, I am happy for all the others," said Ava Cherikovacs.

Bus service is offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment or preregistration. Transportation services are provided "curb to curb." Drivers are not permitted to assist any rider beyond the curb, enter the home, assist with ambulation, unlock doors or carry personal items. Drivers do not accompany passengers into the medical office or building.
