InterCap project will be good for Edison
At the close of your article of April 23, 2008, you allowed Mr. Anthony Russomanno to launch into a diatribe against InterCap and imply that he had the support of the residents of Edison. As a resident of Edison for nearly 12 years, I can say that at no point has Mr. Russomanno represented me nor has he sought my opinion on this or any other matter. He will therefore not have my support but my strong opposition.

With respect to InterCap, unlikeMr.Russomanno, they have soughtmy opinion and those ofmy neighbors about developing land that they own, and I have seen quite a few of my suggestions and those of my neighbors reflected in their plan. Neither the process nor an adequate summary of the resulting plan was mentioned in the article, so please allow me to present it briefly in this letter.

The InterCap plan calls for a mixed-use, pedestrian community close to the Edison train station. As such, it will decrease traffic because it will allow residents of the bordering neighborhoods to walk rather than drivewhen shopping, dining out, going to work and muchmore and, by design, the residents of this pedestrian community will be a combination of infrequent motorists and those who do not drive.

Contrast this with the singleuse zoned developments, residential, commercial or industrial, hitherto approved by our illustrious Planning Board, that have given us our current traffic woes. The people living, shopping or working in these single-use zones are forced to drive home, to the store and to work. The InterCap plan would provide the one place in all of Edison where people can do all three without driving and do so in a pleasant manner. Just for this reason, given the soaring price of gasoline, the public officials should not only be endorsing this plan but replicating it in other parts of the township.

In addition, the plan provides usable and pleasant public space, places you can and would want to walk to and, when there, stroll, play or simply relax. Further, the plan adopted the quality design and workmanship, which my fellow townsfolk and I favored throughout the public input process. The intent, which all of us shared, is to produce a setting for a community that will instill pride among the inhabitants and will make Edison a favored destination on the train route. People will think of us as "London on the Northeast Corridor" instead of "that mess around Metuchen."
