Township attorney's mistake probably an honest one
According to a memo from the Edison Township Clerk's Office, the ruling from Township Attorney Jeff Lehrer that an ordinance can pass with a tie vote "may have been flawed." Consequently, a revote is set to take place at a future meeting.

This confirms the suspicions held by many who had been in the audience that night that, indeed, the township's procedures had just produced a hiccup.

Thankfully, the clerk, Rhianna Murphy, caught this discrepancy before the ordinance could get to the mayor for signing. We at the Sentinel would like to commend her for her attention to detail and her swift response to this procedural fluke.

We would also like to urge the people of Edison, especially those who were at the meeting the night the mistake happened, to give Jeff Lehrer the benefit of the doubt. We feel that it was probably an honest mistake and, really, there's not a single person on Earth who hasn't made at least one of those.

Lehrer should take a lesson from the Sentinel on how to proceed from here: a short announcement explaining the error and why it was made, followed by indications that he "deeply regret(s) this error."
